WHO WE ARE

Mentorship

Mentorship is an invaluable experience shared by two individuals-- both parties learning and growing with each other.

Our tutors are entirely volunteer based. They are willing to give their time to support students who stand where they once stood. Our tutor’s goals align with our program goals: to increase the number of students who graduate and succeed in higher education.

Each semester Metas accepts volunteers from Contra Costa College, UC Berkeley, UC Davis, San Francisco State, San Jose State and other neighboring universities. Our tutors support our students both academically and personally. Through friendship and mentorship, students and tutors make strong bonds and leave lasting impressions on each other.

Beyond Tutoring

The understanding that tutors and students have with each other, makes tutoring a more successful experience because for the most part, tutors went to the same schools that our students are currently attending- some even had the same teachers!

Shared Experiences

Students get to see college students in a more casual setting where they can exchange stories and struggles. Coming from a low-income community, there are scarce role models and our students see our tutors like mentors. High school students have the opportunity to ask them what classes they should be focusing on, how to study for challenging tests and most importantly, how to believe in themselves when things get rough.
